Redox Method

Redox method is short for reduction-oxidation.  This method produces an electro-chemical reaction causing molecules to transfer electrons and produce new elements.  Chlorine comes in contact with the zinc and is converted to zinc chloride which has none of the oxidizing effects of chlorine.  On water supplies with a high mineral content, it may also reduce some heavy metals like copper and lead.  This is a powerful dechlorinator, particularly when used on hot water, making this a preferred media for shower and bath filters.

Two patented medias use the Redox Method

KDF®  contains a copper and zinc alloy

Chlorgon®  contains calcium, zinc and copper.  It works to convert free chlorine and some combined chlorines, such as sodium hypochlorite (liquid swimming pool chlorine), to a harmless chloride.

Benefits: Large capacity for the removal of chlorine; is used                  on bothhot and cold water but is most effective on hot water.

Limitations:  Very heavy, making it difficult to back wash in large filters;  price can vary substantially depending on the market price for copper and zinc

Used in combination with activated carbon.
